Tangut Manuscripts with Tibetan Phonetic Glosses

British Library Or.12380/3909

IDP : British Library Or.12380/3909

Description

This is a single sheet of a Tangut Buddhist manuscript held at the British Library in London. It has the pressmark Or.12380/3909 (originally K.K.II.0282.b v), and was collected by Aurel Stein from Khara-Khoto during his expedition to Central Asia of 1913–1916. It has been studied by Tai Chung Pui (TCP2009), and is available online at the International Dunhuang Project.

The sheet is in very poor condition, with torn and tattered edges. Only four lines of about 19–20 Tangut characters, as well as a couple of Tangut characters and orphaned Tibetan glosses from a fifth line, survive. Altogether, there are about 60 identifiable Tangut characters with complete or partial Tibetan glosses.

Notes

  1. There is a semicircular mark after the Tibetan syllable lo which could be interpreted as a final letter -ng or possibly a tsheg mark, but neither of these readings are satisfactory. However, the fact that the mark occurs on two glosses to the same Tangut character suggests that it is not accidental.
  2. The expected Tibetan gloss is ze, but the actual gloss is za with a dot above, which might by a very stunted e vowel sign.
