All character constructions comprise four Tangut characters, typically in a formula such as "left side of X and right side of Z", but words such as 'top of', 'left of', 'right of', 'whole of' etc. may be omitted where a character is derived from more than two other characters.

Character constructions may be semantic, phonetic, or (most commonly) phonosemantic. 𗰮 'to die young' is a good example of a purely semantic construction.

For everyone struggling to get Unicode Tangut to display on their device ("Tangut is hard, everything about Tangut is hard" as Confucius once said), here is a visual representation of the construction of 𗰮 'to die young' from 𘗽 'lifespan' + 𗅋 'not' + 𘓳 'whole'.
