𗵃 [¹vi₁] 'dragon' is constructed from the top of 𗵂 [¹ly₃] 'to crawl' (to move without legs, like a snake) and the bottom of 𗛟 [¹vi₁] 'dragon tree = longan tree' (phonetic) {𗵂𗥦𗛟𗘡} babelstone.co.uk/Tangut/WenhaiL…

The derivation from 'dragon tree' is unsurprisingly circular, and unconvincing (𗛟 derives from 'tree' 𗝠 and 'dragon' 𗵃 which makes much more sense). This is @MarcMiyake's dissection of Tangut dragon amritas.com/120107.htm#010…

Here is the unique manuscript copy of the Tangut translation of the Sāgara-nāgarāja-paripṛcchā (Question asked by the Dragon King of the Sea) = T599 佛海龍王之法印言經 => 𗢳𗗚𗵃𘟙𗗙𗹙𘟩𘒣𗖰𗚩

Unfortunately not yet digitised on the @idp_uk website idp.bl.uk/database/oo_lo…

@idp_uk @BLAsia_Africa Comparing the image above from Grinstead 1967 with the image in 《英藏黑水城文獻》 (v. 4. p. 286) it looks like it may have already undergone some conservation.

@vauzhao @MarcMiyake It does not seem to be written as 蘢眼 in the two published copies of Pearl in the palm that include the entry for longyan, although I only now notice that there is an extra horizontal stroke, making more similar to 𘂢 'ghost', 𘝌 'evil spirit', etc.
