The derivation of 𗲌 'river' from 𘇲 'ripe, cooked' plus 𗋽 'water' seems a little odd, but maybe the implication is that river water is not still and lifeless like lake water, but because it flows and babbles along its course it has reached a state of ripeness.

Tangut 𗋽 [²zyr'₄] 'water' plus 𗲌 [¹ma₄] 'river' have cognates in a number of Tibeto-Burman languages where the word for river is 'water-river', for example Yi (Nuosu) ꒊꃀ yyp mop [ʑɿ²¹ mo²¹], Lisu e³¹ ma³³, and Muya (Minyak) tɕɯ⁵⁵ mɐ³⁵.
