File Menu
- Close to System Tray : Minimize BabelMap to an icon on the system tray (notification area) on the taskbar. If Options > Other Options > Close to System Tray is selected then closing BabelMap using the X button on the title bar or by selecting "Close" from the system menu will close to the system tray instead of exiting the application. You can make BabelMap open minimized to the system tray by specifying the "-tray" command line parameter.
- Exit : Exit BabelMap.
Edit Menu
- Clear : Clear the contents of the edit buffer. [Same as Clear button]
- Cut (Plain Text) (Shift+F4) : Cut the contents of the edit buffer to the clipboard in plain text format. [Same as Cut button if Cut/Copy configured as plain text]
- Cut (RTF) (Ctrl+Shift+F4) : Cut the contents of the edit buffer to the clipboard in rich text (RTF) format. [Same as Cut button if Cut/Copy configured as rich text]
- Copy (Plain Text) (F4) : Copy the contents of the edit buffer to the clipboard in plain text format. [Same as Copy button if Cut/Copy configured as plain text]
- Copy (RTF) (Ctrl+F4) : Copy the contents of the edit buffer to the clipboard in rich text (RTF) format. [Same as Copy button if Cut/Copy configured as rich text]
- Paste (F4) : Past the contents of the clipboard into the edit buffer.
- Save... (Shift+F5) : Save the contents of the clipboard to file, encoded as UTF-8, UTF-16 or UTF-32. [Same as Save button]
- Copy Glyph (F6) : Copy an image of the currently selected character to the clipboard.
- Copy Glyph Outline (Shift+F6) : Copy an outline image of the currently selected character to the clipboard.
- Simple Rendering : Render contents of the edit buffer as simple glyphs with no joining or shaping behaviour. [Same as Simple Rendering checkbox] * This is useful for working around a bug in the Universal Shaping Engine on Windows 10 which causes emoji and some other characters in the SMP to be rendered as two not defined glyphs in the edit buffer when Noto Emoji or certain other Noto fonts are selected.
- Character Mode > : Select whether to display the contents of the edit buffer as Unicode characters, NCR hexadecimal escape codes, NCR decimal escape codes, HTML entities, or UCN escape codes. [Same as Character, NCR (hex), NCR (dec), HTML, and UCN radio buttons]
Find Menu
- Search for Previous Character (Shift+F3) : Search backwards through the character grid for the previous occurence of a character which matches the text specified in the Search for Character by Name box.
- Search for Next Character (F3) : Search forwards through the character grid for the next occurence of a character which matches the text specified in the Search for Character by Name box. [Same as Search button]
- Go to Code Point : Go to the character matching the code point specified in the Go To Code Point box. [Same as Go button]
- Locate Character (F2) : Navigates to the character before the cursor in the edit buffer (or the preceding character if the cursor is at the end of the line).
- Advanced Character Search... (F8) : Launch the Advanced Character Search tool which allows you to list all Unicode characters that meet specified criteria.
- Unicode Versions... : Launch the Unicode Versions tool which lists information about all versions of the Unicode Standard.
- Unicode Scripts... : Launch the Unicode Scripts tool which lists information about all scripts defined in the Unicode Standard.
- Unicode Planes... : Launch the Unicode Planes tool which lists information about all planes defined in the Unicode Standard.
- Unicode Blocks... : Launch the Unicode Blocks tool which lists information about all blocks defined in the Unicode Standard.
- Mandarin (Pinyin) Lookup... (F12) : Launch the Mandarin Lookup tool which allows you to find CJK ideographs by pinyin reading.
- Cantonese (Jyutping) Lookup... (Shift+F12) : Launch the Cantonese Lookup tool which allows you to find CJK ideographs by jyutping reading.
- Han Radical Lookup... (F11) : Launch the Han Radical Lookup tool which allows you to find CJK ideographs by radical and stroke count.
- Yi Radical Lookup... (Shift+F11) : Launch the Yi Radical Lookup tool which allows you to find Yi (Nuosu) characters by radical and stroke count.
- Tangut Reference Lookup... : Launch the Tangut Reference Lookup tool which allows you to find a particular Tangut character by the reference number used in modern sources.
- Emoji Data... : Launch the Emoji Data tool which lists details about all Unicode-defined emoji, and allows you to copy single or composite emoji to the clipboard.
- Character Properties... (F9) : Launch the Character Properties tool which displays major Unicode data for the currently selected character. [Same as ? button]
- Extended Character Properties... (Shift+F9) : Launch the Extended Character Properties tool which displays all Unicode data for the currently selected character.
- Ideographic Properties... (Ctrl+F9) : Launch the Ideographic Properties tool which displays aditional data for the currently selected character if it is a CJK, Tangut or Egyptian Hieroglyph character.
- Character History... : Launch the Character History tool which lists the core Unicode properties for each version of the Unicode Standard for the currently selected character.
- Unicode Variation Sequences... : Launch the Unicode Variation Sequences tool which shows all variation sequences in the current font for the currently selected character (only enabled if the current font includes glyphs for the character in a Format 14 cmap subtable). [Same as VS button]
- Generate Core UCD Data... : Launch the Generate UCD Data tool which allows you to generate the Unicode Character Data (UCD) files for each version of the Unicode Standard.
- Generate Full UCD XML Data... : Generate the non-Unihan flat format XML version of the Unicode Character Data (UCD) for the current version of the Unicode Standard, and save to file.
- OpenType Test Framework... : Launch the OpenType Test Framework.
Fonts Menu
- Single Font : Use a single font to display all text in the current document. [Same as Single Font radio button]
- Composite Font : Use different fonts to display text depending on what the Unicode characters are. [Same as Composite Font radio button]
- List Bitmap Fonts : List bitmap fonts in the font list (otherwise only TrueType and OpenType fonts are listed).
- List All Styles of Fonts : List all available styles of each font (Regular, Italic, Bold, etc.) in the font list (otherwise only Regular style of each font is listed).
- Legacy Font Enumeration : List fonts using Windows font enumeration (otherwise enumerate fonts using the preferred font name when applicable).
- Show Symbol Font Mappings : Use the conventional mappings of glyphs to Latin letters etc. for symbol fonts (e.g. Wingdings and Webdings); otherwise only show the actual PUA mappings (at F020..F0FF) given in the font's cmap table.
- Grid Font Size > : Adjust the relative size of glyphs in the character grid (this is useful for some fonts that have unusually small or unusually large glyphs at the default size).
- Quality > : Specify the font quality to use.
- Add Fonts from Disk... : Temporarily install fonts from disk (for use in the current instance of BabelMap only).
- Remove Added Fonts : Remove all temporarily installed fonts.
- Overview of All Fonts... : Launch the Font Overview tool which lists summary information about all fonts installed on your system.
- Font Analysis Utility... (F7) : Launch the Font Analysis tool which analyses the Unicode coverage of all fonts installed on your system.
- Font Coverage... : Launch the Font Coverage tool which lists all fonts that have coverage of a specified character or specified piece of text.
- Font Information... : Launch the Font Information tool which lists detailed information about the currently selected font.
- Export Font Glyphs... : Launch the Export Font Glyphs tool which allows you to export glyphs in a specified font to file as individual images.
- Composite Font Mappings... : Launch the Composite Font Mappings dialog box. This allows you to configure the font mappings for the composite font (i.e. which font to use for which Unicode block).
Options Menu
- Unicode Planes > : Configure which Unicode planes to display.
- Unicode Blocks > : Configure whether to list Unicode blocks in the dropdown box in code point order or in alphabetical order (default).
- Character Name Search > : Configure whether to match against informal aliases when searching for characters by name.
- Go To Code Points > : Configure whether to use hexadecimal (default) or decimal values for code points in the Go To edit box.
- Alternative Representation > : Configure what the alternative representation of code point values in the edit box next to the ? button should be (decimal scalar value by default).
- CJKV Readings > : Configure what language to use for the readings for CJK ideographs on the staus bar.
- Character Grid > : Configure whether to insert a character in the character grid into the edit buffer by single-click or double-click and whether or not to automatically copy any inserted character onto the clipboard.
- Popup Magnification Level > : Configure the size of the character in the popup pane that is displayed when you right-click on a character in the character grid.
- Color Coding > : Configure whether to color code characters in the character grid according to a particular Unicode property.
- Cut and Copy Button Defaults > : Configure whether the Cut and Copy buttons copy text to the clipboard in plain text format or in rich text (RTF) format (this default can be overridden using the Edit &t; Cut and Copy commands).
- Composite Font Options > : Configure preferences for auto-configuring the composite font ("Auto" button on the "Composite Font Mappings" dialog). Check "Prefer Noto Fonts" to use Noto fonts where possible, but only for blocks where a Noto font has the best or equal best coverage. Check "Only Noto Fonts" to only use Noto fonts, and for blocks with no corresponding Noto font leave the mapping blank. If "Only Noto Fonts" is checked, checking "Prefer Noto Fonts" will have no affect.
- Other Options > : Configure other options, including whether to convert Basic Latin characters (U+0000 through U+00FF), whether to rotate vertical scripts (Mongolian and Phags-pa) to vertical orientation, and whether to close BabelMap to the system tray.
- Customize Colors... : Configure the colors to use for color coding by Unicode property.
- Reset Options... : Reset all options to default settings.
Bookmarks Menu
- Manage Bookmarks ... : Open a dialog that allows you manage your bookmarks (add, remove, sort bookmarks).
- Add Bookmark (Insert) : Add the currently selected character to the list of bookmarks at the bottom of the Boomarks menu.
- Remove Bookmark (Ctrl+Delete) : Remove the bookmark for the currently selected character (if a bookmark already exists).
- Clear All Bookmarks : Clear the entire list of bookmarks.
View Menu
- Medium Size : Use a medium-sized BabelMap window.
- Large Size : Use a large-sized BabelMap window.
- Hide/Show Edit Buffer : Hide or show the edit buffer. [Same as Hide/Show button]
Help Menu
- Online Help (F1) : Open the BabelMap online help pages in your default browser.
- About BabelMap... (F9) : Launch the About BabelMap dialog box which shows information about BabelMap.
